Baby Eye Infection: Curing Conjunctivitis


Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pinkeye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids.

Though it causes no long-term eye or vision damage but it makes the eyes extremely red and causes a burning sensation in them. The infection usually starts with one eye and then infects the other eye too. Newborns are particularly prone to conjunctivitis which may lead to serious health complications if not treated.

Causes of Pink Eye in Babies



Conjunctivitis is caused many of the bacteria and viruses that cause nose, ear, throat and other infections. It can also be caused be allergic. Kids who suffer from other allergic conditions may end up getting allergic conjunctivitis which is trigger by dust, animal dander etc. In some cases, babies are born with a narrow or blocked tear duct which can lead to conjunctivitis.

Symptoms



Conjunctivitis can last anywhere from two days to three weeks. Its symptoms include redness and swelling of the eye, itchiness, watering, and sticky coating on eyelashes along with eyelids stuck together upon waking and continued irritability.

How to cure conjunctivitis



Since it is a common problem with the kids, it can be easily and effectively managed. However, in some of the cases consulting the doctor and taking antibiotics may be necessary. If your baby is less than one month old, you should see your doctor immediately. Conjunctivitis in a newborn can be a symptom of a more serious condition such as chlamydia.

Wash eyes with warm water and cotton to remove the crusting around your baby’s eyes. Use separate pieces of cotton for each eye. Since conjunctivitis is highly contagious, make sure that you wash your hands before and after the process. Repeat the process couple of times a day. Keep a separate towel for the baby and ensure that no one else uses it. Also, make sure that everyone in the family washes hands frequently.

Consult the chemist and ask him to recommend you some eye-drops that are safe to use on babies. Follow the product guide on the product and give your new born baby.

If the infection continues even after giving eye drops and no improvement is seen than consult your doctor. He may be able to prescribe your some antibiotic eye drops which are stronger and might provide immediate improvement to your baby.
